Performance-based training is essential to enhance learning for our leader development, behavioral intervention, career progression and sustainment of our core competencies. Instructors must incorporate a new skill set of performance-oriented training and facilitation to follow the adult learning model. This workshop is designed for participants to engage in a discussion about performance-based training, unit-based training management system and instructor capabilities. Learning Objectives: • Describe the system of training from on-boarding through to a unit-based training management system. • Define and implement performance-based training to sustain core competencies identified via a job analysis. • Identify the skill set our instructors must have to implement performance-based training. Moderator: Tracy Reveal , Ph.D., Parole Board Member, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation Correction, Cincinnati, Ohio Speaker: David Yebra , Director, Training and Leader Development Division, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Huntsville, Texas C-3F Leadership in the Face of Disaster — Texas Department of Criminal Justice Huntsville Unit Fire Track: Prisons & Jails Room: National Harbor 10 On Friday, August 25, 2023, at approximately 2:20 a.m. staff assigned to the West Building of the Huntsville Unit was alerted by a strong odor of smoke. A review of the area led to staff finding a smoke cloud coming out of the attic area and determining there was a fire. This area housed 665 inmates, and evacuation procedures were immediately conducted. At approximately 7:00 a.m., the fire was contained. Medical services were provided to all staff and inmates with no injuries noted. 547 inmates were relocated to other units due to the damage. The presenters will provide an overview of the incident and discuss

the agency’s response, the outcome of the fire and lessons learned. Room: National Harbor 7 Many offenders with serious mental health diagnoses and cognitive impairment require an invasive medical or dental procedures. Treatment can be challenging because they may have difficulty understanding why dental treatment is necessary, fail to appreciate the circumstances sufficient to provide an informed consent or refuse to cooperate during treatment and/or fail to follow post-operative instructions. This panel workshop will present several scenarios illustrating the challenges and will suggest strategies and techniques to help inmates appreciate the need for treatment, and foster cooperation during and after treatment.
