C-3H Single Breath Return-to-Resting Point Technique: Mindfulness Meditation Approach for Operational Stress Control in a Correctional Setting (CE, CEU) Tracks: ACA Resources/Healthcare & Treatment/Juveniles/Staff Training/ Reentry & Community Corrections/ Special Offenders/Social Work NEW! Room: National Harbor 11 Correctional staff members often experience high levels of operational stress, leading to several negative outcomes such as burnout, absenteeism and health issues. Mindfulness-based interventions could offer a potent solution to manage this stress. Mindfulness promotes present moment awareness with a nonjudgmental attitude, which can reduce stress, enhance emotional regulation and foster resilience. The workshop will introduce participants to mindfulness, present evidence of its effectiveness and teach practical techniques that can be incorporated into daily routines. The goal is to equip correctional staff with the understanding and tools to incorporate mindfulness practices into their lives. Learning Objectives: • Understand the principles and techniques of mindfulness meditation, focusing on the Single Breath Return to Resting Point Technique. • Learn the impacts of occupational stress in correctional settings and the benefits of mindfulness practices in managing such stress. • Apply mindfulness techniques for stress reduction in personal and professional life. A dentist with many years of practice in a prison setting and a psychologist with many years dealing with mental health will offer their perspectives. Learning Objectives: • Explain recommended treatment options to an inmate with a serious mental health diagnosis or cognitive impairment sufficient to provide an informed consent or refusal. • Utilize suggested psychological techniques and strategies for optimizing cooperation when treating inmates with serious mental health diagnoses or cognitive impairment. • Identify a possible treatment team to coordinate and support the inmate with a serious mental health diagnosis or cognitive impairment while they receive invasive medical or dental procedures.
