Vital Signs for Mental Health: Effective Use of the Mental Status Exam for Early Career Psychologists, Mental Health Professionals, and Nursing [ Y CE/CE] Room W230 A Overview: Research indicates clear documentation and communication among providers increases the quality of patient care and reduces negative outcomes. Mental status is a key element in the process of assessment and communication amongst providers and is often underutilized outside of mental health disciplines. This presentation will focus on effective application of the mental status examination by mental health and nursing providers in corrections. Participants will review/learn the elements of the mental status examination, assessment techniques and potential mental and physical health issues (to include substance intoxication or withdrawal) associated with changes in mental status. Presenters will describe the importance of accurate documentation to aid in communication amongst providers and participants will review and illustrate how to clearly document mental status elements objectively. In this presentation, the accuracy and utility of the materials
presented, the empirical basis of statements, the limitations of the content being taught and risks will be addressed. The presenters have no potential conflict of interest and/or commercial support. Learning Objectives: • Identify what the mental status exam is, the importance of accurate observation and documentation of mental status, and how mental status impacts care in correctional settings. • Demonstrate and practice thoroughly performing a mental status exam. • Describe how to effectively and accurately document mental status.
