Rooted in Chicago Beyond’s Holistic Safety Framework, the session explores how administrators are creating healthier, safer environments with support from both their staff and people incarcerated. Hear the real-time impact of Holistic Safety implementations from Dr. Nneka Jones Tapia, psychologist and former warden of Cook County Jail in Chicago and Deputy Director Melanie Martin of the Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Learning Objectives: • Discuss the impact of trauma on the three key stakeholder groups within jails and prisons — administrators, staff and people incarcerated — and how trauma erodes safety. • Learn about Chicago Beyond’s Holistic

Development of a Hunger Strike Consultation Team [CE|CME|CEU] Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections Room: 105 Overview: Various departments such as Security/Operations, Medical, Mental Health, and Food Service, have different perspectives and approaches to dealing with hunger strikes, especially those used for secondary gains which we will call behavioral hunger strikes (as opposed to mental illness driven). It is crucial for all staff members to be of one accord, to avoid triangulation and manipulation by the inmate. This workshop will provide practical guidelines to help manage behaviorally based hunger strikes in a multidisciplinary approach to provide support, guidance and oversight to institutional teams to ensure comprehensive and consistent procedures across a large and diverse system. Learning Objectives: • Identify which departments are essential to be included in a hunger strike consultation team. • Discuss management of hunger strikes. • Develop practical guidelines for the management of behaviorally based hunger strikes.
