Speaker 1: Pracha Peter Eamranond , M.D., MPH, MM, National Medical Director, Assistant Professor, Wexford Health, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts Speaker 2: Teresa Fuller , Justice Services Administrator, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Florence, Arizona Continuum of Care in the Virginia Department of Corrections to Reduce Placement of Vulnerable Populations in RHU [CE|CEU] Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections/Prisons/Prisons & Jails Room: 107 Overview: Collaboration between security, operations and mental health is essential for any correctional system to manage its population, especially seriously mentally ill and vulnerable inmates. It requires a well-trained multi-disciplinary team of professionals to manage the unique risks and needs of this population, particularly those with the greatest potential to cycle through Restorative Housing. This workshop will provide a review of the units VADOC has to successfully manage the continuum of care. Learning Objectives: • Discuss relevant data and performance measures related to the success of each unit. • Identify the steps VADOC took to develop diversionary programs that target the treatment and security needs of vulnerable inmates. Optimizing Reentry: A Tale of Two States. How to Reduce Recidivism among Individuals Releasing from Jails and Prisons [CE|CME|CERP|CEU] Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections Room: 105 Overview: This workshop will educate participants on a broad range of approaches to implementing and sustaining effective reentry programs. The speakers will relay their experience from different segments of the country within both jail and prison systems, including traditional as well as more innovative programs which have shown definitive effectiveness in reducing recidivism to near 0%. This workshop will also explore funding mechanisms to support reentry, common conditions that need to be managed upon release (substance use, mental health conditions, chronic infections, end-organ disease), challenges to operationalizing reentry, collaborative approaches to team-building and key performance indicators to demonstrate success of reentry interventions. Learning Objectives: • Review general concepts of reentry, including exemplary practices, which lead to reduced recidivism. • Explore innovative methodologies, including digital interventions and team-based communications, for improving reentry programs. • Brainstorm collaborative interventions across settings including jails vs prisons
