Enhancing Corrections Safety and Inmate Well-being: Reducing Recidivism with Funeral Streaming Technology Room 102 Overview: This workshop explores the use of streaming technology to allow incarcerated individuals to virtually attend family funerals. It addresses the benefits of maintaining family connections and reducing recidivism through emotional support and rehabilitation-focused programs. Speakers: Nicole Jackson , Research and Reform Specialist, New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission, Trenton, New Jersey; Rolando Nooks , Founder, Compassionate Reprieve, Atlanta, Georgia; Larry Williams , Deputy Sheriff, DeKalb County Jail, Decatur, Georgia Pathways to Success: Pre-Apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeship Overview: Building Futures, a nonprofit workforce development organization operating in Rhode Island, has made a significant impact in advancing economic opportunities for people with records in partnership with the RI Department of Corrections (RIDOC). The Building Futures Inside (BFI) program equips incarcerated individuals with skills, supports, and connections to Registered Apprenticeship employment in trade unions upon release through its nationally lauded pre-apprenticeship program. Attendees will gain an understanding of the transformative power of pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship to overcome barriers through a BFI presentation, discussion of the partnership with RIDOC, and Q&A session with participants.

Cortes , President & CEO, Building Futures, Providence, Rhode Island; Wayne Salisbury , Director, Rhode Island Department of Corrections, Cranston, Rhode Island From Harm to Healing: Virginia’s Crime Victim Speakers’ Bureau Room 108 Overview: As the centerpiece of VADOC’s Victim Impact: Listen and Learn Curriculum, crime victim guest speakers visit our facilities and districts to share their stories with inmates and probationers. During these powerful sessions, crime victims are empowered to share their voices and experiences, and perpetrators are given an opportunity to more deeply understand the harm of their actions and to learn about accountability. We have found a place where crime victims can come together with perpetrators for something that is mutually beneficial, providing healing and growth on all sides.
