Room: National Harbor 10 This presentation will provide participants with an understanding of the BOP’s peer support program. The BOP has a peer support group in each of its 122 institutions, with an additional six regional teams providing support and oversight. We will discuss how these teams contribute to mitigating correctional burnout and suicide risk. We will also review the evidence behind peer support, to include data from BOP focus groups. Participants will leave with an understanding of how peer support teams can benefit their institutions and how peer support fits into a correctional organization’s staff wellness initiative. Learning Objectives: • Understand the evidence behind peer supporters. • Identify three ways peer support mitigates correctional burnout. • Identify three ways peer support aids in suicide prevention. and provide a comprehensive overview of its evolving strategies, measures and resources designed to guide state DOCs and their community partners toward implementation of reentry housing initiatives that expand housing access. Finally, participants will learn from a peer panel of reentry coordinators who are currently implementing sections of the Zero Returns framework to expand reentry housing access through BJA’s Second Chance Act Pay for Success (SCA PFS) Grant Program and the Zero Returns to Homelessness Community of Practice (CoP), which helped a small group of state DOCs develop tailored housing initiatives. Learning Objectives: • Learn about the main tenets of the Zero Returns to Homelessness framework focused on guiding justice system staff responsible for reentry coordination and planning toward the creation of systems and processes that expand reentry housing access. • Equip with tools and guidance to implement key reentry housing action steps through a highlighting of the Zero Returns to Homelessness TA tool used during the Zero Returns to Homelessness CoP, which provided implementation and process roadmaps for state DOCs. • Learn directly from peer State DOC staff who have already implemented or are in the process of implementing Zero Returns strategies through both the Zero Returns to Homelessness CoP and BJA’s SCA PFS grant program, such as improved assessment and evaluation processes and state-level coordination of reentry housing policies and programs.
