Utilization of K-9 in Corrections This training seminar will focus on correctional K-9’s as they serve both on the perimeter and inside correctional environments. There will be an emphasis on CDS introduction and trafficking trends and the improved safety and reduction in violence experienced by correctional staff, residents and visitors because of the presence of an active K-9 Force. Trafficking trends covered include the detection and interdiction of contraband on staff, visitors, volunteers and support personnel, cell phone and electronic detection canines, prevalence of buprenorphine (brand name Suboxone, which is very widespread in most correctional systems), K-2, Spice and other synthetic drugs, alcohol detection K-9s, as well as the value of passive alert dogs and PEOPLE scans. The class will also cover the development of relationships and use of rescue dog organizations to find correctional K-9s at a substantial savings, and the use of unconventional (floppy eared) breeds in detector work (English springer spaniels, Labs, etc.). Learning Objectives: • Ability to articulate the tangible security, safety and health rewards of an active correctional K-9 Program in their facility. • Identify the various drug and contraband introduction avenues used by criminals to bring dangerous contraband into secure facility, and how an active K-9 Unit closes the gap. • Know how to start, improve or grow a K-9 Unit for their secure facilities, thereby reducing violence and improving security and safety for everyone. Speaker: Mark Flynn , Major, Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, K-9 Unit, Hagerstown, Maryland; Stephanus Roling , Sergeant, Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Hagerstown, Maryland
