Structured mentor programs help individuals find meaning and build relationships while enhancing department goals. In all disciplines, thoughtful mentoring improves overall performance and creates upward mobility readiness. In Texas, 122 autonomous probation agencies experienced unprecedented turnover at their highest levels. New appointees were often unprepared for upcoming managerial/leadership challenges. To augment existing leadership programs, a formal Mentor Program was established to assist current directors and those who were “next-in-line.” This workshop outlines the necessity of structured mentor programs and explores lessons learned during Texas’s experience. Learning Objectives: • Identify components of an effective mentor program and discuss strategies to create a mentor program or be an effective mentor in your organization. • Discuss strategies to steer the process when a mentor is off-track.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a treatment that has been adopted as well as adapted for correctional and forensic settings over the last several decades including treating both adult and juvenile offenders with emotional and behavioral regulation difficulties. While this treatment is highly effective, the challenges posed within custodial settings and organizations can create substantial obstacles to the program reaching sustainability and fidelity. This presentation will outline important resources, organizational culture and supports needed to structure a successful DBT program within a correctional setting. Learning Objectives: • Learn each of the five modes and functions of comprehensive DBT implementation. • Identify common barriers to providing comprehensive DBT within a correctional facility setting.
