environment that is conducive to recovery. The difference between this environment and the general population is the commitment required by the participants to maintain a drug-free lifestyle. It is not just about wanting to be in recovery, it is about doing the work to maintain. Recovery Housing promotes critical thinking skills, personal accountability, wellness and healing. Inmate Peer Support Coaches work alongside other TDCJ Peer Influencers as well as unit staff, to establish bonds and build pathways to recovery for the participants in Recovery Housing. D-1E Introducing the Jails and Justice Support Center: A Vital Resource for the Nation’s Jails Track: Jails Room: National Harbor 6 Effectively administering a jail requires the highest level of professional standards, evidence-based approaches, well-trained staff and constitutionally-sound practices to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of residents, staff and visitors. The new Jails and Justice Support Center (JJSC) will provide resources, training and technical assistance to support for the safe and constitutional operation of the nation’s jails. This session will include leaders from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, National Institute of Corrections and the JJSC to discuss the current and future services available through the center; converse with and learn from their peers; and share their perspectives on core challenges jails face today. Learning Objectives: • Introduce the Center to ACA’s conference attendees, explain its origin and history, key goals and objectives and describe the types of training and technical assistance that will be available to the nation’s jails from the JJSC.

• Understand the prevalence of substance use disorder in the inmate population, as demonstrated by TDCJ and DOJ statistics and be able to identify opportunities for change. • Identify the challenges, opportunities and goals of creating a Recovery Housing area on your facility. • Understand how inmate peer support specialists are instrumental in helping their peers navigate the recovery process during incarceration and improve knowledge of recovery resources, providing guidance in the development of wellness and recovery action plans and encouraging pro-social involvement.
