In this workshop, learn how your external communications can make a difference in establishing trust and legitimacy with your community even when it feels like everything is going wrong within jail. This class is geared for the elected sheriffs, anyone handling jail communications and those in charge of the internal investigation. Gain critical knowledge in how to display your commitment to transparency without jeopardizing your case. Walk away with the tools necessary to handle any crisis within the jail. Learning Objectives: • Understand how to write a transparent news release and the best ways to disseminate information. • How to connect with your community during some of the most difficult circumstances. • Gain critical knowledge on how to work with the media in times of turmoil for the organization. C-3B Reaching the Unreachable: Distance Learning in Georgia’s Correctional Facilities Track: Prisons Room: National Harbor 3 Individuals who are incarcerated are significantly less educated than the general population of adults. In Georgia, the educational level of those with an educational need is seventh grade and below. It is clear there is a dire need to educate those in our care. Unfortunately, correctional facilities often face a number of challenges including security and educational staff vacancies, security threats and medical lockdowns. Georgia recognized these challenges and sought methods that would allow education to continue, even when students are unable to attend class. Join the instructional coaches from the Georgia Department of Corrections for an engaging session that will explore how distance learning was implemented. Learning Objectives: • Learn about the distance learning programs implemented in Georgia correctional facilities. • Explore ideas related to educating students in the most restrictive environments. • Brainstorm ideas for implementing programs to include distance learning options during incarceration at their own facilities using Georgia’s model as a guide. Moderator: Sherida Lewis , Instructional Coach, Georgia Department of Corrections, Forsyth, Georgia Speakers: Sherida Lewis , Instructional Coach, Georgia Department of Corrections, Forsyth, Georgia; Andrew Morgan , Instructional Coach, Georgia Department of Corrections, Forsyth, Georgia
