One out of ten falls causes serious injury, such as a hip fracture, or head injury, requiring extensive hospitalization, expensive surgical procedures or permanent deformities. With the aging correctional population, the number of falls and their direct impact on an agency’s medical expenditures and facility housing needs are expected to increase drastically. Fortunately, most falls can be prevented through effective fall prevention programs, as proven by research. This can be achieved by developing a program using performance-based standard requirements that utilize a multidisciplinary approach involving security, healthcare and facilities.
