B-1C Access Federal Resources Now: Pulling Back the Curtain with BJA’s Corrections, Reentry, and Justice Reform Team Track: Prisons & Jails Room: National Harbor 4 This workshop will pull back the curtain on support made available through the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). Within BJA, the Corrections, Reentry, and Justice Reform team helps state, local and tribal justice agencies and their partners make prisons and jails more effective change agents and safer environments for the people who work and reside there. During this workshop, members of that team will: talk about how opportunities are developed; share opportunities for grant funding, technical assistance and other services to meet the needs of corrections agencies; seek input to understand additional needs and how to practically meet them; demonstrate the reach and value of BJA resources; and make connections so agencies have an open line and point of contact with this federal partner. Learning Objectives: • Articulate three ways BJA can help your agency meet its mission. • Understand the array of available BJA funding and technical assistance. • Describe four ways to access BJA resources. • Be connected with your go-to point of contact at BJA. Studies also show that formerly incarcerated individuals who find jobs shortly after release are less likely to recommit a crime, and the likelihood of recidivism decreases further as job stability increases. In this presentation, attendees will hear about correctional education practices within the Missouri Department of Corrections and the Indiana Department of Corrections that, by design, allow their students to apply classroom knowledge to employment situations. This presentation will also provide exemplary practices for cultivating and maintaining strong educational and employer partnerships, to better align correctional education with employment outcomes for people returning from incarceration. Learning Objectives: • Recognize promising mixed medium correctional educational practices that align classroom knowledge to employment requirements. • Identify approaches for developing formal partnerships with employers to provide advisement on the development of education and training curriculum. • Understand innovative strategies and exemplary practices in correctional education that have been shown to improve employment outcomes for the reentering population.
