Addressing Trauma for Correctional Staff and Clients: Lessons Learned from a Pilot Study in Idaho [CEU] Room 205A There has been growing interest to improve Correctional Officer (CO) wellness in the United States, driven by sobering statistics that reflect the mental and physical impact of a career as a CO. Incarcerated individuals experience significant childhood adversity, and correctional environments can add additional trauma. Between 2022 and 2023, the Idaho Department of Correction conducted a pilot study to measure the impacts of trauma mitigation interventions for staff and incarcerated individuals. The pilot resulted in more than 150 staff and 450 residents accessing services. This session will review how the project was created and implemented, data on utilization and outcomes and recommendations to improve engagement in services. AI (Artificial Intelligence) says there are more prisons and jails located in the rural than urban areas. Moderator: Darryl Campbell , Association Warden, Louisiana Department of Corrections, Baton Rouge, Louisiana Speaker: Art Beeler , Retired/Consultant, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Franklintown, North Carolina Safety Starts with You: Being Physically and Mentally Prepared for your Tour of Duty [CERP/CEU] Room 204 Each day correctional officers and staff face a significant threat of physical violence and workplace injury. A 2011 study showed for every 10,000 full-time correctional officers, there were 254 workplace assaults and violent injuries, which was 36% greater than any other occupation. Additionally, studies have shown correctional officers are at a much greater risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety, depression and PTSD. This presentation will review the risks of working in a correctional environment and offer evidence-based strategies that officers can implement each day to be better prepared physically and mentally, thus reducing the risk of physical assaults and workplace injuries.
