The discovery of Penicillin in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) marked the beginning of antibiotic awareness, even though widespread use of antibiotic therapy did not happen until World War II when Chain and Florey purified penicillin G. After 1945 penicillin became widely available outside the Allied Military. This marked the beginning of the antibiotic age. Unfortunately, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics has now threatened its health benefits and has led to the evolution of antibiotic-resistant organisms that are all but untreatable. An alarming trend has been the drastic rise in C. diff infections related to the prescribing of clindamycin. This session will Moderator: Shelley Edgerton , Program Director Opioid/MAT Substance Treatment,

Escape From Dannemora: The Real Story Room 201-AB The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), will present an inside account of the 2015 escape of two murderers from Clinton Correctional Facility -- a maximum security prison in Northern New York. The real story is even more compelling than the news reports and the “Showtime” dramatization. The initial presentation will include an accurate description and chronology of events from planning to escape to capture and beyond, video of the actual route through the prison to the manhole taken hours after the escape and the Governor’s coordination of law enforcement which lead to the capture of inmate David Sweat and the death of inmate Richard Matt. The session will conclude with simple, easy and proven action items to be implanted in any correctional facility. Moderator: Dan Martuscello , Commissioner, NYSDOCCS, Albany, New York Speaker: Christopher M. Martuscello , Assistant Commissioner, NYSDOCCS, Albany, New York Can You Get ‘Clean’ in Dirty Water? Exploring the Prison Environment, Basic Needs, and the Barriers to Substance Abuse Rehabilitation [CEU] Room 204 When surviving the prison environment is at the forefront of the offenders’ minds, daring to dream can be a distant childhood memory. Moreover, over 85% of offenders have to contend with substance use, but only 11.2% receive adequate substance abuse treatment. Offenders often have little motivation toward reaching personal and substance abuse rehabilitation goals during incarceration due to the onus on daily survival. The purpose of this presentation is to share the results of this single case study, conducted in one prison in Louisiana, to potentially provide solutions and implementation strategies to create a prison environment conducive to the rehabilitation of offenders.
