A-4A The Great Wardens Project — Leadership for Change Room 125B Track: Prisons The Great Wardens Project, an initiative by Just Detention International, aims to help wardens and superintendents reach their potential as leaders and to create safer facilities. This session will explore the differences between a great leader and a great manager, and how wardens and superintendents can create effective mission and vision statements that support their growth as leaders while making facilities safer. Presenters will offer concrete examples of ways they have fostered leadership development in themselves and their staff. The session will highlight resources available through the Great Wardens Project, including upcoming Leadership Summits, monthly newsletters and peer support opportunities. Learning Objectives: • Understand the goals of the Great Wardens Project and its achievements to date. • Recognize the skills and attributes of a great leader, as compared to a great manager. • Identify how to develop a vision and mission statement that will support their own growth as leaders. A-4B Correctional Litigation 101 Room 126A Track: Jails This presentation will cover the basics of the correctional litigation process. It will touch upon common correctional cases — to include inmate deaths, excessive use of force claims and medical lawsuits within the jail. It will also touch upon collection of data for research and analysis, risk management basics, DOJ reporting, CPRA requests and subpoena duces tecum processing. We will discuss the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA) and how important it is for correctional staff to know its ins and outs. Learning Objectives: • Understand what the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA) is. • Explore the various types of data that can be collected in the correctional setting to help with litigation. • Review the common cases that often arise in a correctional setting, and everything you should have ready to defend your agency.
