Research has shown how the use of effective interpersonal communication skills

has relevance to most aspects of correctional work. This interactive workshop will highlight the efforts of the ACA Professional Development committee’s work to research national trends linking this subject to ways in which agencies conduct not only use of force and special population management training but also how it is being used as a tool to restructure the culture of the organization. Learning Objectives: • Identify the difference between a conflict-based and a problem-based or customer service orientation. • Explain three advantages for utilizing de-escalation techniques when dealing with a person in crisis. • Discuss utilization of de-escalation techniques as applied within a fluid use of force scenario.
