Recent case law will be highlighted. Learning Objectives: • Participants will be able to immediately apply proven strategies and approaches to daily operations including but not limited to: Introduction to hearing loss and its impact on communication competency, methodology, and expectations for staff and deaf and hard of hearing offenders. • Participants will understand the relationship between hearing loss, language and educational levels which impact skills of daily living and their applicability to corrections. • Participants will gain an understanding of the impact of misdiagnosed, undiagnosed and exacerbated mental health disorders specific to the deaf and hard of hearing offender and their applicability to correctional settings. • Participants will learn litigation issues and hot topics across the country specific to corrections and deaf and hard of hearing offenders. outcomes for youth in post-dispositional residential care. This workshop will review the Youth in Custody Practice Model (YICPM), which serves as a guide to best practices in youth corrections. An overview of the YICPM will be provided, including the developmental origins and core components. As an example of the implementation of the YICPM, the San Diego County Probation Department will review strategies for how the model is used to improve outcomes as well as the working environment for staff and living environment for youth. Data informed decision making requires accurate data sets from comparable populations or environments to track national or local correctional metrics and trends.
