Comment : An infirmary, within the correctional setting or a specific area of a health care facility separate from other housing areas, is where juveniles are housed and provided health care. Admission and discharge from this area is con- trolled by direct medical order or written protocols.
Protocols : Written policy and procedure; nursing-care manual or equivalent.
Process Indicators : Completed health care treatment plans; staffing schedule spec ifies 24-hour nursing coverage; documentation of on-call or available 24-hour health care practitioner coverage; observations; interviews.
Communicable and Infectious Disease Management 5-JCF-5C-23 (Ref 4-JCF-4C-22)
(MANDATORY) A written program addresses the management of communi cable and infectious diseases in juveniles The program plan includes proce dures for the following: 1 Prevention to include immunizations, when applicable 2 Surveillance (identifying and monitoring) 3 Juvenile education and staff training 4 Treatment to include medical isolation, when indicated 5 Follow-up care 6 Reporting requirements to applicable local, state, and federal agencies 7. Confidentiality of protected health information. 8 Appropriate safeguards for juveniles and staff, including post- exposure protocols A multidisciplinary team that includes clinical, security, and administrative representatives discuss and review, at least quarterly, communicable-disease and infection-control activities Comment : Because of their serious nature, methods of transmission, and public sensitivity, communicable and infectious diseases require special attention. Agen cies work with the responsible public health authority in establishing policies and procedures.
