(MANDATORY)Written policy, procedure, and practice provide that all persons injured in an incident receive immediate medical examination and treatment.

Comment : Immediate medical examination and treatment should be required in all instances involving the use of a weapon or chemical agent.

Use of Firearms 5-ACI-3A-33 (Ref. 4-4204)

(MANDATORY) Written policy and procedure govern the use of firearms, in- cluding the following:

• weapons are subject to stringent safety regulations and inspections • except in emergency situations, employees carrying firearms are assigned only to watchtowers, gun walks, mobile patrols, or other positions that are inaccessible to inmates • employees supervising inmates outside the institution’s perimeter follow specific procedures for ensuring the security of the weapons • employees are instructed to use deadly force only after other actions have been tried and found ineffective, unless the employee believes that a per- son’s life is immediately threatened Comment : Personnel who spend most of their time in direct personal contact with inmates should not carry firearms. Any personnel authorized to use firearms must be properly trained and demonstrate competency in their use.
