Spectacular drone demonstration amazes and alarms attendees

Drone Detection and Deterrence Symposium O n the 4 th Floor Mezzanine of the Hyatt Regency Orlando, Airsight, a drone detection service, held a demonstration of how drones can be used to subvert current preventative measures at correctional facilities. An expectant but chilled crowd gathered under an overcast sky as Charles “Chip” Dick of Air sight began the presentation. “If you had a correctional facility, that had a door that everybody kept coming in and out, you put a lock on that door. Drone detection is just another part of your business security,” he began. He introduced Robert Tabbara, CEO of Air sight who led the demonstration which consisted of seven different demonstrations of how drones are used in a correctional setting and how they can be tracked. The first demonstration was of a drone drop.

“We’re going to be flying in here, hovering somewhere over this court and drop it. This is a good visual to see what a drop looks and how loud it is,” said Tabbara. A large video screen displayed the interface and Tabbara did a running commentary on the infor mation coming up on the screen as the attendees scanned the sky for the still unseen drone. Tabbara described the technology of the first drone dropping a package: “The manufacturer built it to drop fishing gear. Folks that are using these drones don’t even have to modify the drone. I can buy this fishing drone and be able to hit a button on the controller.” Soon the first drone was visible and the whirring sound of the rotors was clearly audible. Tabbara noted he was flying it closer than neces sary to make sure the drop would occur safely but in practice the sound would be difficult to discern.
