The Kronos Project is a 10 month residential program located in Dorm 2 and consists of 6 to 8 inmate groups known as “families”, each led by an Encourager. The Encourager is an inmate who previously graduated from a previous cycle and has been chosen and approved by Jake Logan. The role and duties of the Encourager include assisting newly assigned inmates in acclimating to the program and facilitating family meetings and schedules. Although the program is faith based, it is made clear in the beginning that it is multi-denominational and there is no pressure to convert to any particular faith group. The 10 month curriculum includes 7 mandatory courses and 14 electives. Some of the electives are taught by former Kronos graduates. We begin by following one of the inmate families newly arrived in 2-dorm. They are Mateo, Carter, Strong, Jax and Abbas, Artie will be their Encourager. When Artie calls the men together for their first family meeting, he addresses the obvious, Abbas isn’t there. He was escorted out of 2-dorm yesterday and was currently “in the hole”

for stealing from the commissary. This presents an early lesson on individual accountability in Kronos. This vacancy will be filled later. We follow these five inmates, four participants and one encourager as they get started. First they must name their family. Artie gives them a day to kick some ideas around but wants the men to come to a consensus. They select “ The Journey” as the family name. Highlights of some of the most impressive chapters TOPUCU is about a new way of thinking, taught over twelve 90 minute sessions and stands for “The only person you cheat is you.” Takeaways from this session include change the way you think, change the way you feel and change the way you act. Chapter 14 In Chapter 14 titled “Everyone Belongs” we are introduced to Peter Henderson, a Criminal Justice professor from the University of Kentucky and former basketball player there. This was one of the more insightful and moving chapters in the book. Professor Henderson’s lecture to all eight families was about dignity
