Legal Issues

Mental Health Inmates that suffer from mental illness require a designed approach. Understanding how to work with this population is vital to the safe manage- ment of any institution. The Mental Health course package offers a basic understanding of mental illnesses and strategies to prevent suicides in correctional settings. This package consists of 4 individual courses and touches on array of issues with mental health located within a correctional setting for adult population. –– Managing Inmates with Mental Illness — review of the factors in the correctional environment that influence inmates with mental illness and identifies the common signs of mental illness. –– Understanding Mental Illness and Treatment in the Cor- rectional Setting — examines the common mental disorders that inmates may have and the treatment that is provided for inmates to help them deal with their mental illness. –– Managing Depressed and Sui- cidal Inmates — discusses the impact of a suicide on staff and inmates, the support services available to deal with a com-

The Legal Issues courses pro- vides a basic foundation of the criminal justice system and an understanding of inmate’s rights. This package contains 9 individual courses all centered around our legal system and the correctional field. When working with inmates, it is imperative that we are versed in our legal system. The Legal Issues package discusses rights afforded to inmates, as well the manner in which our criminal justice system operates. Below you can find a sum - mary of a few of the courses offered under this package: –– Our Civil Justice Process — a case study will guide you through the steps of a typi- cal civil lawsuit involving an inmate. –– Our Criminal Justice System — examines the major parts of the criminal justice system, and then take you through arrest and charging, to conviction and sentencing. –– Inmate Use of Force Lawsuits and Due Process Rights — discuss what force can be used, how much can be used, and when it can be used.

The Security/Inmate Management course package includes 12 individu- al courses spanning from 5-9 training hours. Courses within this packet dive into the intricacies of the roles that need to be carried out within an institution. It also details appropriate inmate management. Some of the feature courses include: –– Duties of a Correctional Officer — examines the correctional officer’s role in maintaining safety and security, supervising inmates, classifying inmates, and communicating with staff. –– Communicating Nonverbally with Inmates — designed to enhance the nonverbal commu- nication skills of correctional officers and other staff who interact with inmates. –– Managing Keys and Tools — identifies the categories of keys and tools used in a correctional environment. It also examines how to control keys and tools and the role of the correctional officer in this effort. Other topics discussed include security rounds, verbal and non- verbal communication with inmates, contraband and searches, and much MORE!
