A-4C American Nurses Association 2020 Correctional Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice Update (CE) TRACK: Nurses This presentation will cover the third edition of the publication entitled 'Correctional Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice' that was published by the American Nurses Association in 2020. The document is designed for nurses to use as a guide to the correctional nurse's specialty practice, as well as to inform the public who may need to understand the role expectations of this professional nursing specialty. Improving understanding of how antibiotics work will be helpful in preventing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This workshop will explain the responsible use of antibiotics to help practitioners identifying circumstances when antibiotics are indicated, choosing the right antibiotic, and prescribing at the right dose for the right duration. Learning Objectives : 1. Participants will be able to identify circumstances when antibiotics are indicated.
2. Participants will be able to list appropriate dosing for corresponding durations. 3. Participants will be able to identify prevention strategies to reduce the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Cavinder , DDS, MPH HP, Valley Center, San Diego County, CA A-4E The Value of Visits and Volunteers: Lessons from the COVID-19 Crisis Track: Security This workshop will review the typical impact felt at a facility due to the loss of family visits and volunteer visits during COVID-19, as well as review some creative ways facilities compensated for the loss to keep morale up, families connected and programming going. This workshop will also give an overview of research concerning family and volunteer interaction on inmate wellbeing and recidivism rates, demonstrating the importance of keeping these connections going by all means possible during prolonged shutdowns. Based on the above research, best practices concerning family visits and volunteer visits will be given, with the hope of improved staff relations with family and volunteers, resulting in improved offender outcomes. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand research findings concerning the effects of family and volunteer visits on offender outcomes. 2. Appreciate the creative ways facilities helped maintain family and volunteer connections throughout COVID-19 visitation shutdown. 3. Implement best practices regarding staff's role in the volunteer and family interaction.
