Development and Implementation of Behavior Management Plans [ Ψ CE|CE] Room: 103 A Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections Overview: The prevalence of mental illness within correctional populations is increasing, as prisons increasingly function as de facto psychiatric institutions. These settings— characterized by safety concerns, social isolation and limited support—contribute to elevated rates of self-injury, suicide attempts and aggression. This workshop will examine the structured development and implementation of behavioral management plans to mitigate these behaviors and enhance institutional safety. Participants will learn to identify behavioral antecedents, consequences, and adaptive alternatives, and will collaboratively formulate intervention plans based on case studies. Learning Objectives: • Demonstrate an understanding of antecedents and consequences of behavior. • Describe the steps of a functional assessment and developing a behavioral management plan. • Demonstrate knowledge of behavioral management plans based on a case study. When Control Fails: Rethinking Responses to Extreme Self-Injurious Behavior [CE|CME] Room 103 C Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections|Prisons & Jails Overview: Extreme self-injurious behavior (ESIB) carries heavy costs—medical, operational, emotional and ethical—for residents, staff and institutions. When control and punishment fail, facilities often double down on force or isolation, unintentionally worsening crises. This presentation explores how shifts in organizational beliefs and practices can reduce ESIB, and create safer, more stable environments by balancing safety, accountability and compassion. Learning Objectives: • Identify and describe the operational, ethical and human costs associated with extreme self-injurious behavior (ESIB). • Analyze how institutional beliefs, attitudes and cultural practices may contribute to the escalation or maintenance of self-injurious behavior among residents. • Differentiate between behavioral consequences and punishment and explain their respective effects on the frequency and severity of self-injurious behavior. Moderator: Robyn Hodges , Psy.D., Senior Vice President of Mental Health, Wellpath, Nashville, Tennessee Speakers: Daniel Bannish , Psy.D., Psychologist, Consultant, Harpswell, Maine; Robyn Hodges , Psy.D., Senior Vice President of Mental Health, Wellpath, Nashville, Tennessee
