Suicide Prevention in Corrections [CE|CME] Room: 103 B Primary Community of Focus: Prisons & Jails Overview: In this workshop, we will present social science research related to correctional officer suicide and describe the nature and extent of suicide among correctional officers. We will discuss the relevance, incidence and correlations of officer suicide with a focus on the role of critical incident response. We will identify barriers to, and opportunities for, suicide prevention in correctional settings, with an emphasis on ways clinicians can identify risk and provide clinical interventions. Finally, we will offer strategies to help correctional administrators and clinicians support suicide prevention among correctional officers. Learning Objectives: • Identify risk factors for suicide and correlations of suicide among correctional officers. • Understand barriers to providing mental health support in the correctional occupational context and be able to develop strategies for overcoming those barriers. • Articulate approaches to, and strategies for, suicide prevention and postvention among correctional officers. Innovating Corrections Through Community Collaboration Room 102 B TRACK: Community Partnerships Overview: Correctional leaders and
community partners are increasingly called on to find creative solutions to challenges related to institutional culture, safety and well-being. Yet meaningful innovation can be difficult to achieve. This panel will explore collaboration between correctional agencies and community-based organizations, drawing on recent food, farming and health-related projects implemented in partnership between Impact Justice and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Panelists will share how targeted, problem-solving initiatives have strengthened safety, improved morale and supported opportunities for people living and working inside facilities.
