DBT has demonstrated effectiveness related to many of the problems youth justice systems encounter. However, in order to achieve fidelity in implementation, it is clear the culture within the facility has to shift to adopt and live by DBT principles, including those of acceptance, change and dialectics. This workshop will walk participants through the journey of this system working toward implementation, early planning and structuring, implementation efforts to date and the outcomes achieved to date. Same Mission, New Setting: Adapting What Works Across Custody Levels in the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Room 101 A TRACK: Operations Overview: The Restoring Promise Initiative partnered with the North Dakota Department of Corrections in 2020 to open a specialized young adult housing unit in a maximum-security facility. In February 2025, they opened a second unit in a minimum-custody setting. Presenters will discuss how differences in custody level, daily operations and population dynamics shape implementation, staff engagement and outcomes. The session will highlight how scaling the initiative aligns with the department’s mission and vision and how what we’re learning from a process evaluation can inform future expansion efforts. Attendees will gain practical insights for adapting programs across facilities and defining meaningful measures of success.
