Prescription Drugs of Abuse in Corrections: Trends, Risks, and Management Strategies [CE|CME|CERP] Room: 103 A Primary Community of Focus: Adult Corrections|Jails|Juvenile|Pris ons|Prisons & Jails|Pretrial Overview: Prescription drug abuse remains an increasingly complex challenge in corrections. While attention has long focused on illicit substances, the diversion and abuse of prescribed medications, particularly opioids, benzodiazepines, gabapentanoids, antidepressants and stimulants presents significant safety and treatment concerns for patients and correctional staff. This presentation will examine the prevalence, types and methods of prescription drug misuse and diversion. Current trends, risk factors, and institutional responses, including monitoring systems, formulary management and behavioral interventions shall be examined. Emphasis will be placed on balancing security and safety concerns with ethical duty to provide care.

Learning Objectives: • Identify the most frequently abused classes of prescription drugs within correctional institutions and describe their associated behavioral and clinical risks. • Analyze the primary factors contributing to prescription drug diversion and misuse in jail and prison environments. • Evaluate evidence-based strategies, policies and treatment approaches designed to mitigate prescription drug abuse while maintaining quality medical care.
