Situational Awareness of Violent Encounter Readiness Room 104 A/B Overview: In the world of corrections, the possibility of violence is always present. That is why it is crucial to always maintain situational awareness as a part of everyday routines. The awareness consists of continuous monitoring of the situation as well as adjusting your movement to the situation to be able to react in time, if needed. Situational awareness is also built on the actual actions and behavior of a corrections officer. By body positioning and posture, gestures and lines of movement, one can either de-escalate situations or be prepared to walk out of those without the use of force. This workshop prepares correctional officers to maintain full situational awareness, to understand the effects of stress factors and prepare for safe positioning in stressful situations. Speakers: Ray Atallah , Head Instructor, CPE Production Oy (Dark Night Systems), Welland, Ontario, Canada; Juha Kylä-Harakka , Business Development Manager, CPE Production Oy, Forssa, Finland

Beyond AI: Building the Intelligent Operating System for Modern

Corrections Room 101 B

Overview: We all hear a great deal about AI these days — the risks, the conveniences, and the hype. In reality, most of us are still using AI primarily as a tool to help edit documents. Meanwhile, there are very real and immediate challenges in corrections: staffing shortages, contraband, drug use and overdoses, declining officer morale, and the financial limitations that tie all of these together. Technology only matters when it helps us address our biggest problems. In this session, we will focus on how AI can help us tackle these challenges head-on and, just as importantly, how we can financially justify the investment required to do so.
