This presentation explores the multifaceted nature of SIB in incarcerated individuals. A case study will illustrate the limiting effects of stigma, and the intersection of trauma, mental illness and environmental stressors that contribute to self-harm behind bars. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary collaboration among security, medical and mental health professionals, to ensure continuity of care and more positive outcomes. Individual and systematic factors, as well as evidence-based interventions (e.g., DBT, TAMAR and STEPPS) will be reviewed.
