Clinical Updates in Correctional Medicine [CE/CME/CERP] Room W230 A Overview: While the tenets of medicine are consistent across many different environments of practice, the environment of correctional medicine has additional and unique requirements. This presentation is an effort to highlight the unique issues that affect our practice of medicine within the carceral environment. This particular session is going to be discussing the following: 1. Continuation of the pain management curriculum; 2. Revisit the topic of spinal abscess; 3. Bifasicicular block and syncope; and 4. An intro to critical reading of medical articles. Learning Objectives: • Have a working knowledge of the different medications that are available for pain. • Have a better understanding of the topic of spinal abscesses. • Able to identify bifascicular block. • Have an overall understanding of how to read a medical article with a critical eye. Maul , M.D., Chief Medical Officer and Health Authority, Colorado Department of Corrections, Colorado Springs, Colorado Dementia in the Incarcerated Population: An Overview of the Present and Future Treatment and Management [ Y CE/CE/ CME/CERP] Room W230 B Overview: The purpose of this presentation is to inform the audience about the growing elderly population in correctional custody. This is not just the case in Florida. This is the case around most of the United States, England, Wales, Australia and many European nations. A significant portion of this elderly incarcerated population has some form of cognitive impairment, the most common of which is dementia. We will demonstrate statistics that show the size of this population in the past, compared to today. We will then forecast

Speaker 2: Dominique Juste , DMD, Director of Correctional Dental Services, NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Albany, New York What Would You Do: Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics [CE] Room W240 B Overview: Individuals practicing as licensed nurses, regardless of the setting, must be familiar with, and comply with the laws/rules and standards governing their role and practice setting, in the compact states or specific state in which they practice. As the Nurse Practice Act (NPA) can change each legislative session, practicing nurses must stay abreast of any changes. Not knowing is not an excuse. This workshop will discuss the Nurse Practice Act (NPA) in general, Standards of Nursing Practice, principles of nursing ethics and professional boundaries. Specific ethical issues that can arise in a jail or prison setting will also be discussed. Discussions specific to the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) and its compact states will include Rules 217.11, Rule 217.12, and Position Statements. Learning Objectives: • List at least three ethical principles nurses should encompass. • List three of the nine American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics Provisions. • Discuss three resources that guide licensed nurses’ practice.
