Human Experience Research to Inform Enduring Design and Operations Interventions for New York City’s Borough Based Jails Room W231 B/C Overview: To close Rikers Island, New York City has embarked on the development of four Borough Based Jails which will improve community access, programming and the environment for constituents of the facilities. To that end, the city has engaged a Human Experience Design Consultant to hold listening sessions with people in custody, staff and families to explore their lived experience and to advise the Department of Correction on interventions that could improve day-to-day human experience and outcomes. This session presents the City’s courageous commitment to invest in a process that has yielded heartfelt input from constituents, the findings (many unanticipated) and the potential for owners to use this kind of approach for enduring outcomes. Unlocking Potential: Empowering New Officers in Corrections through Success Coaching Room W232 B/C Overview: This presentation will focus on the implementation and impact of success coaching in corrections training academies. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight how success coaching has been instrumental in empowering new officers in corrections. The success coaching program at each Georgia Department of Corrections Basic Officer Training Academy involves individual meetings between a success coach and a cadet. These sessions provide education and career opportunities, as well as a platform for peer support. Additionally, weekly review sessions have been introduced to track cadet progress and address any challenges they may face. We first discuss predictive modeling in corrections (Redden et al., 2020). Panelists then describe the development and integration of the tool into Georgia’s case management system (Latimore & Inkpen, 2024).
