The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Mental Healthcare Within Correctional Settings: Clinical and Ethical Considerations Room W230 B Overview: There is growing interest in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in behavioral healthcare within correctional settings. In the community, AI is being used to improve assessment and diagnosis of mental disorders, particularly early detection, as well as identify those at risk for suicide. Such applications would significantly improve behavioral health services within our jails and prisons. While AI shows promise in improving efficiency, significant concerns about bias, transparency and ethical implications have been raised. This presentation will review areas where AI is currently being used in behavioral healthcare settings in the community and correctional settings. The presentation will include discussion on responsible development, governing policies and bias

mitigation strategies to ensure equitable and just outcomes. Learning Objectives: • Describe areas in which AI is being utilized in mental healthcare. • Understand ethical concerns about the use of AI in mental healthcare in corrections, as well as methods to ensure proper use of AI to improve clinical outcomes. • Apply information learned from this presentation to evaluate areas in their facilities or departments where AI initiatives may be clinically useful.
