Research continues to identify substance abuse as the number one cause of recidivism.

This presentation synthesizes current research on epidemiology, pharmacology, health consequences and treatment modalities, with particular emphasis on neurobiological recovery processes. The presentation integrates findings from recent studies that include dopamine system disruption and restoration, providing a scientific foundation for clinical practice and policy development in addressing this significant challenge to correctional operations and healthcare.
