A-3G Trauma and At-Risk Juveniles: Secondary Traumatic Stress and Resiliency of Criminal Justice Practitioners (CE, CEU) Track: Juveniles/Social Work NEW! Room: National Harbor 7 This lesson is taught via a combination of lecture, discussion and group activities. The purpose is to introduce attendees to healthy resiliency building techniques to lessen the negative effects of secondary traumatic stress which relates to serving traumatized youth. During the workshop, an interactive group activity will give the participants a perspective of the difference between typical work stress and secondary traumatic stress. They will be introduced to self-care and resiliency building techniques, such as practicing meditation, perspective building and expressing gratitude. Brief video clips and practical exercises will accompany the presentation of each technique. A-3F Escape from Dannemora: The Real Story Track: Prison Room: National Harbor 10 The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) will present an inside account of the 2015 escape of two murderers from Clinton Correctional Facility -- a maximum security prison in Northern New York. The real story is even more compelling than the news reports and the “Showtime” dramatization. The initial presentation will include an accurate description and chronology of events from planning to escape to capture and beyond, video of the actual route through the prison to the manhole taken hours after the escape, and the Governor’s coordination of law enforcement which led to the capture of inmate David Sweat and the death of inmate Richard Matt. Learning Objectives: • Identify steps to uncover similar escape plans and suspicious conduct. • Understand the significant financial costs attributed to the event. • Anticipate and address the loss of morale in facilities in the aftermath of the event. • Explain the long-term value of administrative and criminal sanctions for staff. • Identify strategies for 24/7 media attention during and after the event. • Identify the chronology of events in this escape event. • Describe the benefits of a coordinated law enforcement approach. • Understand the ramifications of compromised security and civilian staff.
