A-2C Pathway to Retention: Re-engineering Correctional Training Academies Track: Staff Training Room: National Harbor 4 The Moss Group was awarded BJA funding to examine correctional academy training. TMG’s comprehensive national scan, in collaboration with key correctional organizations, included administering a national survey of DOC academies, conducting curriculum reviews, evaluating designs and delivery of curricula and conducting on-site observations, including review of academy organization and infrastructure, technology and training outcomes and facilitating staff interviews and focus groups. This workshop will present findings, themes and trends in training that impact recruiting and retention, introducing guiding principles, tools and assistance developed and still needed from • Understand the complex challenges associated with correctional training identified through professional curriculum review, on-site academy observations, surveys, interviews and focus group participation and how these complex challenges impact retention in correctional facilities. • Reflect on how learning and delivery styles can be influenced to maximize resources, reach differing generations of learners, and improve recruiting and retention outcomes. • Examine how including non-security staff in training objectives significantly improves operations and safety. A-2B The Kentucky Department of Corrections Crisis Negotiation Team: Past and Current Use and How Federal, State and County Operations Coordinate Use Track: Jails Room: National Harbor 3 All too often crisis negotiation teams are needed and due to pressing staffing needs, are not prepared, and have not routinely practiced. The presentation of information related to the Kentucky Crisis Negotiation Team will provide attendees with knowledge and awareness of how these teams have been used in the past in both reactive and proactive manners in Kentucky. The method of selection of team members as well as routine training and skill enhancements will be shared. Finally, the interaction and training with county jail staff, staff of the Bureau of Prisons in Kentucky and the FBI will be shared in order to demonstrate the importance of these relationships in crisis negotiations. Learning Objectives: • Identify how the Kentucky Department of Corrections utilizes the crisis negotiation team in a proactive manner to communicate information to the facility populations when it is anticipated the information may be controversial/not well accepted. • Identify how the Kentucky Department of Corrections has utilized the crisis negotiation team in the past in response to emergent situations within specific facilities. • Identify how the Kentucky Department of Corrections selects and trains crisis negotiation team members in conjunction with other stakeholders such as county jails, Federal BOP facilities and the FBI.
