A-1M PREA at 20: Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future (CEU) Track: Prisons & Jails/Social Work NEW! Room: National Harbor 14 Rape is not part of the penalty. These words echo the intent of the Prison Rape Elimination Act that no matter what crime someone may have committed, sexual abuse is not acceptable. In the 20 years since the passage of the landmark PREA legislation, many practitioners, advocates and survivors have worked to implement the law and end this public health crisis. Presenters will share highlights from PREA anniversary events, including a brief video of historic moments. Participants will also hear from a formerly incarcerated survivor of sexual abuse in confinement. There is still more work to be done; presenters will share new resources and gather input from attendees on what they need to prevent sexual abuse and support incarcerated survivors. Room: National Harbor 12 The management of transgender individuals in correctional settings has become one of the most prevalent issues to face officials in recent times. A number of factors impact the approach to housing and providing care to this population, to include PREA, state legislation,

legal challenges and court decisions, and evolving medical and mental health practices. All systems are affected in navigating through the healthcare, operational and legal responsibilities in this area, and will hold a panel discussion of professionals with medical, legal, and operational expertise on intersection of these areas, and the resulting exemplary practices.
