A-1F Effective Interdiction Approaches to Stem the Flow of Drugs and Contraband in Legal Mail and Privileged Communications Track: Prisons & Jails Room: National Harbor 10 This workshop will cover exemplary practices, processes and pitfalls of screening legal mail and privileged communications. The increasing digitization and copying of personal mail have led to a significant increase in contraband and drugs sent in fraudulent legal mail or privileged court documents and poses unique screening challenges. Practitioners will frame the magnitude of the problem and discuss approaches to protect both privacy and deliver efficiencies, while preventing the flow of drugs and contraband. Also discussed are new approaches being employed by leading DOCs to policy development, staff training and emerging technologies to screen for threats ranging from powders to liquids, and electronics to drug-laced papers, all without opening the mail. Learning Objectives: • Understand the legal mail and privileged correspondence problem. • Understand the pros and cons of current screening and detection approaches and

how to integrate new technologies to deliver both efficiency gains and improve staff safety. • Articulate exemplary practices used by several states adopting new screening processes and policies to detect contraband and drugs in mail items without opening them.
