Explore the Essential Skills for New Supervisors! — NIC Stakeholder Organizations: International Association of Corrections Training Personnel, American Correctional Association and any organization interested in first-line supervisor development. Track: Staff Training Room: National Harbor 4 Are you a new first-line supervisor? Yesterday you were a line staff member and today you are providing “super-vision” to others? If that is your circumstance, this interactive National Institute of Corrections (NIC) workshop is for you! Making the transition from a line staff member to a supervisor of others calls for developing new skills and competencies, including a critical perspective shift from doing one’s work to supervising and getting the work done through others. During this workshop, we’ll explore the gateway competency of self-awareness, and additional integral skills and competency areas of a successful and effective contemporary corrections supervisor. You’ll experience excerpts of NIC’s Essential Skills for New Supervisors course and find out how you can access this crucial resource for your agency! A-1B Motivation in Action: Recognizing Opportunities, Managing Attitudes and Avoiding Complacency in Correctional Leadership Track: Staff Training Room: National Harbor 3 This presentation focuses on the principles of leadership and the concept that correctional officials in leadership roles must be chief motivators. Topics covered include opportunities to motivate others, improving satisfaction in the workplace, the importance of attitude and avoiding complacency. The key is to recognize opportunities and capitalize on them, inspiring others to reach their full potential and operate with an attitude of perpetual optimism. Concepts of integrity, character, teamwork, servant leadership and selfless service are also discussed. Learning Objectives: • Understand the importance of motivation in leadership. • Understand the vitally important role of a positive attitude in motivating and leading others. • Be able to apply key leadership concepts personally and professionally to be of service to others.
