Correctional Education in the Digital Age: Maine’s DOC and Partner Share Lessons Learned from Embracing Normalized Access & Opportunity Over the past few years, the Maine Department of Corrections has dramatically increased opportunities in higher education for its residents through the use of technology. By completely restructuring its technology infrastructure, MDOC has developed a more secure network for residents. This process required substantial policy changes, forward-thinking decision-making and gaining buy-in from stakeholders. How to Educate Your Legislature on Education in Corrections Legislative support is vital in enhancing and expanding education in corrections as it ensures the necessary resources, legal frameworks and standards are in place to promote rehabilitation, reduce recidivism and enhance the prospects of successful reentry into local communities for incarcerated people. This session focuses on the importance of educating your legislature about the impact of education programs for incarcerated people and how to build relationships with lawmakers who invest in the growth and development of education pathways in prison. Participants will hear how Texas and Washington State have been successful in partnering with the legislature to develop and receive funding requests, as well as strategies for engaging the lawmakers in your state to advance education in corrections in your state.
