B-1J Balancing Care and Caution: Anticholinergic Use in Corrections (CE, CME, CERP) Track: Healthcare & Treatment Room: National Harbor 13 Anticholinergic medications play a significant role in the healthcare of individuals within correctional facilities considering over 50% of this population presents with complex medical and psychiatric conditions. This presentation will explore the multifaceted landscape of anticholinergic medication use within the correctional setting — shedding light on both the therapeutic potential and associated risks. Anticholinergic medications are commonly prescribed to manage a range of conditions such as allergies, respiratory disorders, psychiatric disorders, Parkinson’s disease, pain and irritable bowel syndrome; however, their use in a correctional context warrants careful scrutiny. Beyond the therapeutic benefits there are many potential risks associated with anticholinergic medication use, especially in corrections. Given the heightened vulnerability of incarcerated individuals to various health disparities, we delve into the challenges of monitoring side effects (e.g., cognitive impairment, dry mouth, and increased risk of falls). Moreover, we discuss the ethical considerations surrounding the use of anticholinergic medications, especially in light of informed consent and the potential for misuse. In summary, we will explore strategies for
optimizing anticholinergic medication use within the correctional setting as well as to provide the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions regarding their use, ultimately improving patient quality of care and well-being. Learning Objectives: • Identify clinical conditions and medication classes commonly associated with anticholinergic utilization and side effects. • Understand safety risks and financial burden with anticholinergic drug use in vulnerable populations. • Provide knowledge and tools to minimize the risks associated with anticholinergic medications in corrections.
