B-1F Navigating the Evolving Legal Decisions Impacting Prisons and Jails Track: ACA Resources Room: National Harbor 10 This session will provide valuable insights and knowledge to understand the current legal landscape in jails and prisons. Two of the leading experts in the country on this topic will ensure an informative and interactive learning experience. Lunsford , Attorney, Butler and Snow, Huntsville, Alabama/ Association Council to Correctional Leaders Association (CLA) B-1G Instrumental Self-Injury in Correctional Institutions: Data, Functional Assessment, Behavior Management and Impact on Staff (CE, Y CE, CEU) Tracks: Healthcare & Treatment/Security/ Special Offenders/Social Work NEW! Room: National Harbor 7 Self-directed violence (SDV), comprising non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal self-injury and suicidal threats, presents a continued challenge for correctional institutions. Within the broad group of offenders who present SDV, only a subset demonstrates a Persistent Self-Injury Risk (PSIR). The realities of assessing, treating or managing the PSIR subset in a prison environment is not well-reflected in the professional literature nor is the impact on staff. The workshop will include original data, case examples of the function of these behaviors in prison, the frontline perspective of the impact on staff and interdisciplinary approaches to behavior management. Learning Objectives: • Identify existing perspectives from professional literature on the classification of self-directed violence.

We will host a discussion with an organization doing research around correctional education technology to provide a national perspective. We will discuss the challenges, benefits and opportunities for current and future expansion of technology delivered and enhanced educational opportunities. Our presentation will also focus on the Wisconsin DOC journey to advancing distance learning as well as the considerations we must make regarding operations and security modifications in our efforts. Our final goal is to provide a framework from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) on the opportunities for funding and job training programs for building the nation’s infrastructure for digital equity.
