Learning Objectives: • Create and implement diverse committees composed of previously incarcerated citizens who are dedicated to improving the climate, programs and policies in prisons. • Understand the steps, resources and support needed to develop manuals and directives that outline policy and procedures for committees that utilize previously incarcerated citizens. • Advocate to prison leadership the importance of including previously incarcerated persons in discussions on the policies and procedures that affect those who are currently incarcerated. communities and systems. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has convened a committee that relies on these leaders to ensure policy, practices and programming, behind and beyond the fence, leads to equitable opportunities and positive change in our prisons and a successful reentry back into the community for all incarcerated persons. The panel, led by Maryland Secretary Carolyn Scruggs will discuss the committees’ mission, vision and recent outcomes, along with the importance of developing a positive relationship with DPSCS.
