This panel brings together leaders in the field of higher education in prison to help ACA members understand the federal regulations for Prison Education Programs (PEPs) and the opportunities for corrections agencies around the country (including state, federal and military), to learn about successful programming, and to gain access to valuable resources from the American Correctional Association, the U.S. Department of Education, the Vera Institute of Justice and the Tennessee Higher Education in Prison Initiative (THEI). Leading and Living Through Loss: Perspectives from Correctional Leaders Room 205-B The presenters have personal experiences in leading and living through loss. Loss is a part of all our lives whether it has been through loss of a loved one, job, relationship, friend or some other expectation, such as an empty nester or title. Correctional leaders operate 24/7, 365 days a year, and leadership doesn’t stop because loss
occurs. This interactive workshop will focus on grief and loss. How do you and those around you respond to loss or understand better someone who has experienced loss? Speakers: Sylvia Morris , Facility Chaplaincy Director, Retired SCI Smithfield/ Bee-Lieve 4 It Ministries, Mount Union, Pennsylvania; Scott Semple , Retired Commissioner, Semple Consulting, LLC, Watertown, Connecticut; Wynnie Testamark , Director, Bureau of Corrections, St. Croix, Virgin Islands Development and Implementation of the Core Competency Model for Corrections: Self-Directed Violence Training for Correctional Behavioral Health Clinicians [ Y CE/CE/CME/CERP/CEU] Room 205C Primary Area of Focus: Correctional Education Primary Community of Focus: Prisons This presentation will address the development and adaptation of a core competency training model for correctional behavioral health clinicians in the assessment and management of self-directed violence (SDV, includes both suicide and self-injury). The presentation will focus on the implementation of the Core Competency Model for Corrections (CCM-C). This training approach to self-directed violence and suicide prevention includes 10 core competencies that have been reviewed and adapted to meet the unique needs of correctional settings and populations. The program addresses evidence-based clinical care (e.g., establishing an evidence-based treatment plan) and clinician self-management (e.g., managing one’s reactions to self-directed violence) skills. The training model includes provision of self-reflection and clinical resources, psycho-educational content and case studies.
