Identifying and Responding to Human Trafficking Survivors in Juvenile Justice [CEU] Room 203-AB This workshop will focus on a statewide juvenile justice system response to identifying and responding to victims of human trafficking. Participants will learn about the Ohio Department of Youth Services (ODYS) Human Trafficking Screening Tool (HTST), a validated non-proprietary tool intended to screen for high-risk indicators of sex and labor trafficking. During this workshop, presenters will discuss the screening tool, the implementation of this tool in Ohio’s statewide juvenile justice system and the holistic response to identified victims of human trafficking. Additionally, participants will learn how this assessment was adapted for county courts to screen youth entering the justice system through a local agency. Research indicates juvenile justice-involved youth are at an increased risk of experiencing trafficking and exploitation, rendering the need for appropriate identification and response protocols critical. Moderator: Jodi Slagle , Bureau Chief of Community Facilities, Ohio Department of Youth Services, Columbus, Ohio
instigated comprehensive changes throughout our recruiting, onboarding and retention practices. In the course of our work, we completed more than 100 discrete improvement activities, with expert guidance provided by a small group of consultants. Examples of our work included: focusing on mission-driven hiring (Brewster & Cerdin, 2018; Grant, 2015) that shifted the focus of the type of candidate we were seeking to hire; obtaining and relying on data which allowed us to quickly adjust strategies to maximize our efforts; implementing automated communications with applicants to encourage them through the process, without burdening staff; and launching an intentional retention effort that taught managers how to actively foster staff engagement in the work. Moderator: Bree Derrick , Deputy Director, Idaho Department of Correction, Boise, Idaho Speakers: Cory Barrier , Deputy Chief of Probation & Parole, Idaho Department of Correction, Boise, Idaho; Whitney Ascuena-Bolt , Interim Strategic Initiatives Manager, Idaho Department of Correction, Boise, Idaho; Liz Neville , Deputy Chief of Prisons, Idaho Department of Correction, Boise, Idaho
