Common terms and concepts will be reviewed to better understand the language used in case law and regulations. PREA regulations will be reviewed, and cases relating to issues regarding protection, self-harm, medical care, social transition issues and staff issues will be discussed. Participants will gain a greater understanding concerning the legal evolution of these issues and the current state of the law. Closing the Gap Between Staffing Supply and Demand: Emerging Strategies Room 203-AB It may take many more years to fully recover from the jail staffing crisis. This workshop will share a wide range of strategies and actions that have proven effective at closing the gap between demand (what needs to be done on a shift), and the actual supply of staff (how many staff report for the shift). This workshop goes beyond initial recruiting challenges to explore many new strategies to: improve staff retention, make the best use of the staff you have, tune up operations to increase staffing efficiency, find schedule configurations that best fit daily demands, identify the scheduling needs of staff, evaluate 8/10/12 hour shifts; use part time employees, considering staffing needs supervising inmates who present new challenges (violent, mentally ill, substance abuse), operating a Direct Supervision Unit without enough staff and more.
