ROAR Program: The Pros and Pitfalls of Starting a Medication-Assisted Treatment Program in a Prison Facility Room 206B After receiving federal funding to plan, develop and implement a rural, jail-based program that offered peer support recovery services, access to cellular services and a medically managed opiate withdrawal/medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program to offenders with opiate use disorders, intentions and hopes for success were high. Although many aspects went according to plan, there were some aspects that were unforeseen. This workshop will help participants consider the pros and the pitfalls that may be encountered when beginning their own medically managed opiate withdrawal/medications assisted treatment program within a prison facility. Learning Objectives: • Participants will be able to identify if there is a need for MAT in their facility and understand the “Pros and Pitfalls” in
the planning and preparation phase of implementation.
• Participants will be able to acknowledge the “Pros and Pitfalls” of the potential design and delivery of managed opiate withdrawal/MAT. • Participants will be able to understand the possible “Pros and Pitfalls” to linkages to care and services upon offender release.
