Candida auris is a yeast that is multi-drug resistant and notorious for being difficult to eradicate from environmental surfaces. In 2022, our prison hospital experienced an outbreak of Candida auris. Through a collaborative effort with the Center for Disease Control, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Department of Criminal Justice and The University of Texas Medical Branch

Epidemiology Department, a robust surveillance screening, infection control and disinfection program for Candida auris was implemented for patients admitted into our hospital. Learning Objectives: • Participants will understand the significance of Candida auris. • Participants will understand the various routes of transmission and infection control measures for prevention of Candida auris. • Participants will be able to discuss how to develop, implement and monitor Candida auris within their prisons and jails.
