B-2B How to Prevent Drone-Based Contraband Drops Track: Prisons Room 201-B Drone-based contraband delivery has been an escalating threat to prisons over the past years as drones become cheaper to procure, simpler to pilot and have greater payload capabilities. Drones easily circumvent traditional physical security measures at correctional facilities to deliver high-value and often disruptive goods to inmates. While the threat of drones at correctional facilities remains top of mind for virtually all security teams, drone detection capabilities will enable specific facilities to actually measure their individualized drone threat and consequently design a complete system including technology, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and personnel training to mitigate that threat.
B-2A What does the Survey of Sexual Victimization Tell Us About Substantiated Incidents of Sexual Abuse? Results, Resources and Recommendations Track: Prisons/Jails Room 201-A Conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the Survey of Sexual Victimization collects administrative information on allegations and substantiated incidents of sexual victimization for persons in custody. An expert from BJS will summarize key findings about substantiated incidents in prisons, jails and juvenile facilities, including topics such as how incidents are reported, disciplinary and legal consequences for incarcerated perpetrators and staff perpetrators and services provided to victims. Experts from the National PREA Resource Center and Just Detention International will discuss how these results can inform practice, highlight available resources and make recommendations for improving facility safety. Learning Objectives: • Understand key findings about substantiated incidents from BJS’s Survey of Sexual Victimization. • Find key resources available for PREA practitioners and for staff in prisons, jails and juvenile justice facilities.
