The difference between this environment and the general population is the commitment required by the participants to maintain a drug-free lifestyle. It is not just about wanting to be in recovery, it is about doing the work to maintain. Recovery Housing promotes critical thinking skills, personal accountability, wellness and healing. Inmate Peer Support Coaches work alongside other TDCJ Peer Influencers as well as unit staff, to establish bonds and build pathways to recovery for the participants in Recovery Housing.

Learning Objectives: • Understand the prevalence of substance use disorder in the inmate population, as demonstrated by TDCJ and DOJ statistics and be able to identify opportunities for change. • Identify the challenges, opportunities and goals of creating a Recovery Housing area on your facility. • Understand how inmate peer support specialists are instrumental in helping their peers navigate the recovery process during incarceration and improve knowledge of recovery resources, providing guidance in the development of wellness and recovery action plans and encouraging pro-social involvement.
